“Beth” means house. “El” means God. At Bethel, Jacob encountered God’s presence. Set up in his dream was a ladder with angels ascending and descending. At the top was God. “This is a dreadful place, a place filled with awe,” Jacob would say. “Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place and I knew it not.” Bethel, Jacob called it the gateway to heaven. But is it is a place? Doug suggests that what Jacob merely dreamed about, Jesus made a reality. He in fact is the ladder. He is the one who opened heaven. By his work and ministry, angels are coming and going. It is not about the holy places, but holy people connected to the holy person, Jesus.
